About seven months into dating this guy — I’ll call him Ethan — I’d already met basically his entire family. Parents, grandparents, cousins, random aunties who appeared out of nowhere at family dinners… the whole package. I was genuinely trying to make a good impression too, because I really liked him and wanted the people around him to at least tolerate me.
The awkward part was that most of his relatives assumed I was just “his little friend,” and his parents never corrected them. That already told me enough about how they felt about the relationship, especially his mom, who always acted weirdly cold toward me.
One night Ethan and I were on FaceTime while I was reorganizing my rock collection. I collect rocks with unusual textures, patterns, or colours because I’ve always been obsessed with stuff like that. It’s one of those hyperfixations that my family has joked about forever, especially since we’ve suspected I might have ADHD for years.
Apparently his mom overheard part of the conversation from the hallway. And by “overheard,” I mean she was very obviously listening in.
Later that night she sent him this massive text saying she thought I was “probably on drugs” because “normal people don’t collect rocks like that.” Specifically, she compared me to a meth addict. Over rocks.
The funniest part is she knew about the possible ADHD thing already, which somehow makes the whole situation even more ridiculous.
I still tell this story whenever people ask me about the weirdest thing an ex’s parent has ever said to me because honestly… how do you even respond to that 💀
And no, before anyone asks, this wasn’t the reason we broke up. But it definitely didn’t help his case.
