Cybersecurity Career Roadmap

Cybersecurity is one of the fastest-growing fields. Here’s how to break in.

Month 1-3: Build IT fundamentals. You can’t protect what you don’t understand. Learn networking (how data moves), operating systems (Windows, Linux), and basic scripting (Python, Bash). Get comfortable with the command line.

Month 4-6: Get certified. The CompTIA Security+ is the entry-level gold standard. It’s not expensive. It teaches you the basics of threats, cryptography, and risk management. Many jobs require it.

Month 7-9: Specialize. Cybersecurity is broad. Do you want to be a penetration tester (ethical hacker)? A security analyst (monitoring for attacks)? A GRC professional (policies and compliance)? Pick one and go deep.

Month 10-12: Build a lab and document it. Set up a home lab with virtual machines. Attack them. Defend them. Write blog posts about what you did. Employers want to see hands-on skills, not just certificates.
